Subject: Re: Spreader bridging problem

Saranac, Michigan
I have exactly the same problem with a litter spreader here. It is furnished by the poultry ranch so I will have to live with it through the fall. We intend to build one this winter. If you have any advice on building one, it would be appreciated. We have shoveled many tons and it is no fun.
In the old days we had an asphalt plant and the feeders did the same thing, bridging so that no no aggregate would go to the dryer. After poking it for too may years, we built a bin vibrator that took are of it. It was simple to make. We took two pillow block bearings and a short 1" shaft that we hooked to an electric motor. We bolted the blocks to a plate on the bin. On the shaft between the bearings, we welded a chunk of 3/4" rod about a 1/3 the way around the 1" shaft. When the bin plugged we had a mercury switch on a flap that detected that no aggregate was coming through and it started the motor. It vibrated the whole bin automatically and the problem was solved.
Since it was turning at about 1760 rpm, it was pretty aggressive and we had to grind some of the 3/4" rod off. We are thinking of doing the same on the spreader box except using 12v motor or hydraulic motor.
