First you have to decide if you want an automatic or an auto shift. Both are availible. There really aren't any problems with either of them beyond the obvious fact that they do add some mechanical complexity to the truck. The auto shift will pull out of the field exactly like a manual. The automatic will do it far better because of the torque converter. I doubt that either will really change the value/cost of teh truck by a great amount but it will be a lot harder to find what you want, especially in an automatic. Automatics are pretty rare in high hp so you will have to look for a long time. If you go under 300 hp there will be far more to pick from.

The military has lots of automatic FLD Freightliners.
