Subject: RE: Kochia seed for sale...

Wyoming

What they're selling is known as "prostrate kochia" -- and the doggone BLM is in love with it for burn reseeding here in Nevada.

The "upright" kochia is what you and I know as a low-moisture seed and what Ed is talking about having to clean seeds out of his wheat. It grows in areas where all you have for moisture is high humidity. We haven't had more than about 0.75" of water from the sky all summer long and the kochia here is about 2 feet high.

The prostrate kochia is a different animal completely. It is a perennial, instead of an annual.

Now, for those who graze cattle, let me warn you of this: permitees here in Nevada are reporting cattle deaths in/near patches of prostrate kochia where it has been used to re-hab a fire area. Cows seem to get into a seeding and some cows can't take it. Because it is green well into the heat of summer, cows will start mowing it down. There hasn't been any conclusive information about why this happens, but it seems likely that nitrite poisoning might be involved.

Should anyone want to seed prostrate kochia, be aware that the seed loses viability quickly. You can buy this year's seed around now -- if you wanted to plant it, plant it ASAP. If you wait over the winter, you'll have only 30% of your seed still be viable next spring.
