You can search this forum and I think this has been discussed several times so you may find more responses. I myself was wondering the same thing a couple years ago and asked also. We never ran ours for beans just put them in for corn. I found out last year that we didn't need them in corn either. I don't think we'll ever use ours again. Some people have rocks and they're opinion is that they have to have them for that reason. I don't have much experience with rocks, but I've definitely swallowed a lot of hard washed up wood chunks and pieces of concrete and bricks in my time. They always wind up in the rock trap without the filler bars, but everyone's situation is different. Well that old military tire didn't go in the rock trap, but I think the filler plates would have bit the dust in that experience anyway. BH
