I'd either use exhaust tubing, or call around pipe suppliers in the area for some mechanicle tubing or Schedule 20 pipe. It would definitely last longer than PVC and could be a structural element of the frame.
PVC will need to be supported the entire length, or it will sag and cause more problems.
