Don't know if the 9600 is different or not, but I have an early ('91 with about 2200 sep hours) 9600 with the wood blocks. They are still the original. There is no ring or anything on it. The walkers will move side to side. The only wear I can see from when it was new is where the edge of the block will move to one side to the area where the crank bends. It is just a little. I had a couple off a few years ago and measured the wear on the crank. It was hardly noticable and most just the difference in the thickness of the paint.
