only reason to use plastic would be for rust. Do you plan on using it for fertilizer? If not then I would use steel also. I wouldn't use a brush auger but would try one of the cupped types. If you think you want to build from plastic and are worried about the end cap and plastic taking the torque you can always use a steel clamp on style power head or cut six inch round piece of qaurter inch plate to bolt to the cap.
How would you build an auger like this?
