Southeast MN | I put in a rear driveshaft u-joint in my 03 Dodge 2500 w/ hemi this summer at about 50K. I would hear a squeak when I first started to back out of the garage. Infrared thermometer pinpointed the hot spot to the joint. Still under warranty w/ 100 deductible. Instead spent 20 for a greasable jobber joint and swapped it myself. It's too early to tell how long this will last but it gets greased every oil change. The IR thermometer is a nice gadget, and easy to look for hot spots after a long run or heavy pull. Now all joints run at same temp as tranny case and axle housing. 10 years aga, my s10 lost a u joint at 40k and little bro's Chevy 1500, same model year, lost one around 50k.
I agree that 50k is premature, but not a big deal if you catch it early. | |
