Mount Vernon, WA | Glow plugs are difficult to test accurately with an ohmmeter since they have such low resistance to begin with (typically something like .2 to .3 ohms). Most meters will have that kind of resistance just in the leads, so if you don't zero the leads first, you might draw the wrong conclusion.
Having said that, most glow plugs that go bad will fail open, in other words, a very high or infinite resistance reading. That would be easy to detect.
A foolproof way to test glow plugs is to simply remove them and put power to them and see if they get red hot. Just make sure you're not holding on to the business end of the plug when you do. | |
