Subject: STS chopper bearing failure and fire

Montevideo, MN
Last year and now today we ended up with a cornfield fire from the idler pulley on the straw chopper drive. The pulley that does not move with the tightener. The bearing was gone and things got hot in a hurry. We got them both put out without the FD. Keep your extinguishers fully charged. It makes for some tense moments. All you need to do to check those bearings is relax the belt tension and spin them. We have gotten lucky twice. If I can save someone else from having this problem this post was worth it.
