Calif's Southern San Joaquin Valley used to be mostly alkali. Gypsum is a big part of why it is one of the most productive ag producing regions in the world. Gypsum is still heavily applied here. It might not be economically feasible in your area, but if I were you I would find out. If deep ripping worked here, we would not be applying additional gypsum in a new pistachio orchard now. It would not absorb water. That ground was ripped six feet deep about 4 months ago, right before it was planted. This is done here to bust up a hard pan layer, although ripping that deep is rare. If your problem areas have excess calcium, you might be able to get the same result with sulfur for less money. That is also done here, but you should ask someone who really knows soils.
