Thumb of Michigan | I agree with you 100% Panhandler- at least for our conditions. Last thing in the world I'd want to do is grind up corn stalks when no-tilling. In a perfect world (for me) a corn head that works like a stripper head would be ideal. Leave as much as possible standing up. If its on the ground, you either have to cut it or move it. Thats if you can get it dry enough to plant in the first place. We mostly deal with wind erosion here, but water erosion can be an issue on some ground. Either way, if the residue is detached from the plant, it'll wad up somewhere we don't want it to.
I know that it "looks" nice to have stalks chewed up a bit- but I'd be really careful about getting to agressive with that if you plan on no-tilling it. | |
