Deere had an IVT designed and tested in either the 4010 or the 4020 which, according to the description I have read, was basically a pair of varible speed sheaves with a steel "v-belt" running between them. Again, according to what I have read, it was very successful operationally but was not practical to manufacture at the required tolerances and a reasonable cost for mass production under the state of the art at the time.
