Subject: Re: JD 544H starter

It started fine, but it would have been a temporary fix. The ring gear teeth were knocked back about half way in spots. I wanted to make certain it would not cause trouble when it was really needed. We bought our 544H used and I do not know how long this condition existed. We bought it right and the pre-buy engine/trans oil analysis came back good, so fixing something like this was not too aggravating. If you heard grinding noises for a while, you might want pull the starter out again and look at the ring gear. Yours may be ok, and if it won't start you can turn the engine a little bit manually with the fan to get it past the worn spot. The dealer stocked the ring gear (which is available overnight by the normal order method and costs less than $100). Plus the shop foreman did not hesitate when he said pulling the engine was the easiest was to replace the ring gear. It seems to be a common problem.
