Subject: soy bean population plot

Thumb of Michigan
A while back, someone was asking about planting rates for 30" soys. As part of our variety plot, we also did a replicated population plot as well. All results were weighed over a scale. Soys are no-till, 30" RUR beans. Field was planted on 5/23- our last field. Not scientific, but the fields planted a month previous to some of the same varieties in our plot yielded about identical over the scale. We didn't get any beans in in Mar for the first time in a few years, but most were planted by the end of April. Anyway, heres the results:

135000 = 59.41 bpa (normal planting rate)
120000 = 60.44 bpa
100000= 58.30 bpa
750000= 55.72

At this point, I don't feel that theres much difference statitistically. I will be confident leaving a less than perfect stand based on what I've seen here, although I still don't think I'll drop much less that 120000 next year.
