Pearls every sample as part of the before dumping tests. Chit is when a kernel starts to germinate but does not show it on the out side. Also to check for deep mold .
also Pearling tests are run on feed barley to determine if it is plump enough to be sold as pearling barley for soups. Read a label . Contents will list "pearled barley" in Campbell's veggie soups as well as others . If it is pearlable , most elevator will bin it separate to keep the premium for them selves. Only once in the past 50+ years do I recall an elevator calling to see if we had any pearling quality barley and offering a 5 cent bonus .That was back in the early 50's
