I believe, here, the seedling die off is a function of competition for light, moisture, and nutrients. A 2 foot root will have problems competing with a plant with a 10 to 20 food deep root system.
One field I nursed through 11 seasons, by allowing the stand to thicken 2 different and separate years. Field finally got so rough I could not stand it.
I have never understood the why one field will have volunteer seedling alfalfa survive for a number of years and the one right next to it not, but it happens. | |
