My opinion is that you need to grow oats where it is cool - oats do not like the heat. Quite a few years ago, I went to visit a friend in Clearfield Co. area, and I was impressed with the oats growing in that area - a heck of a lot better than what we can do.
Years ago, a (wise) county agent told me, "you need to plant oats in March. If you don't get them seeded in March, don't waste your time on them." I think for our region he was pretty much in line.
Personally, I believe getting the right planting date (i.e. early) is a lot more important than getting the right variety. Just my perspective on growing oats in this area.
