Yes early planting is key. many people here are notilling into soy stubble while there is still frost in ground in spring, they will wait til ground is thawing in daytime and freezing again at night, then they will go out at night when it freezes enough to be "dry" but still loose enough to plant into with no till drill. Also done for spring wheat. If you are after straw, the best yield still is fall wheat.
