I am a huge backer of going fiber when you can.

#1 - Ground fault differential - The electrical panels and grounding in two different buildings will always be "different." Any weakness in one building's electrical system can and does encourage extra electrical current through your copper network cable, and potentially blowing components on one end or another. Sometimes these weaknesses are direct, immediate and complete failures - other times you will be chasing intermittent "ghosts" where weakened components won't fail totally, but come and go, driving your diagnosing skills over-the-edge.

#2 - Fiber is faster - you can put in one set of fiber and enjoy better speeds by upgrading the equipment on the ends of the fiber.

#3 - BUY PRE-TERMINATED, EXTRA LENGTH FIBER - keeping "maintenance loops" of 10-15' on both ends. Thus you can move if plans change or get in someone to replace an end if needed. ALSO, don't just buy two fibers - you can buy fiber cables with multiple circuits (fibers) contained there-in. Each is identified by a different color, so you can make sure you have the right fibers connected on each end.

#4 - Bury a inter-duct - which can be as simple as black plastic water pipe. Once buried, you can get a pull-string through the pipe with a shop vacuum and an adequate length of carpenter string. The inter-duct will allow easy addition of other wires/cables or replace same should something happen.

Addendum - HP ProCurve switches mentioned in the above link can also be found in 1-10gig ports for sale on eBay or other places.

Keep us posted on your choices and how your project is proceeding. Best wishes!

Yes fiber is faster but most people don't have a 5 meg connection let alone the 10GBASE-T connection that would be required to saturate cat6.
