Subject: RE: Teach me about Fiber Cable

Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Direct bury cable usually has a gel inside that repels moisture if the outer jacket gets damaged. The idea is to prevent oxidation of the copper. With fiber, I think its more of a lubricant for bending, so the strands can move and don't get pulled apart. Fiber itself doesn't have a ton of tensile strength, so if you're pulling indoor fiber through a long conduit with bends, the indoor stuff might not be strong enough to get pulled through.

If you're using conduit, it's relatively easy to replace a bad cable. You could pull in cheap indoor CAT5 and if it goes bad in 5 years, just pull it out and pulll another one in.
