The thought that first popped into my head is the file location. If you opened it from an email the file may be saved in your 'temporary downloads' (or similar) folder. You may not have 'permission' to modify these folders, hence the read-only message. If so try saving it in the same location with other Excel files that you know work and see if anything changes.
