What version of Excel do you have? What version does he have?

As long as yours is the same as or newer than his I would think you could get it to work.

Whenever I download a spreadsheet from an email Excel somehow knows and opens it as read only. The reason it does this is because you can use macros with Excel. Macros are basically little programs and they can be malicious in nature.

To protect you from a malicious spreadsheet Excel will open spreadsheets that originated in a computer other than your own in read only mode. At that point you will usually get a pop-up saying it's in read only mode. The pop-up may say, "enable editing".

So if you trust the source of the spreadsheet you click "enable editing" and then you'll be able to mess with everything.
