A project such as high speed rail only works in areas of dense populations, such as the Northeast Corridor or the West Coast. There is simply no way to make high speed rail viable for middle america, no way. Too much distance, too much infrastructure, too much cost. And, even if you had the money, you run into the "I want high speed rail, but that train ain't going through my back yard" crowd. Basically it all comes to a wash. Only in places with existing infrastructure would you get to build a line. A much better plan for rail to serve middle america would be to upgrade rolling stock and build a dedicated track along existing lines capable of supporting interstate speeds, 60 to 75 miles an hour. That is the best way to handle it that I see. No blazing 100 mph trains, but trains that get you there on time for a reasonable cost. |
