Obviously, I have not had to make that choice yet.
However, I have had to deal with kid's medical issues and so have a little story to relate. Our son was born with a cleft and palate. He has had 4 surgeries since he was born. He is now 6 and is slated for another surgery next week. I remember during his first surgery, at 3 months old, when he was recovering from surgery. I remember him being extremely uncomfortable and wishing that I could transfer that pain to myself so that he would feel no pain. I had never felt that feeling before. The love of parent for their child is something that is hard to describe till you have felt it personally as many of you can attest. Had heard people including my parents talk about that but it became real to me that day in the hospital.
I realize that is very different than dying for your child, but I got a glimpse what that thought process must be like.
