Firmly grasp the usb device and pull it out of the machine. As long as it's not actively accessing the drive it's fine.
If that doesn't do it for you there's a chevron on the right side of the task bar at the bottom of the screen. Left of the clock and volume icon. Icon you're looking for should be somewhere in the list that comes up when you click the chevron. Right click the appropriate icon.
