Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | Maybe different with different IOS, phones and computers. I have an iPhone 6 running on the current IOS. When I plug the USB to lightning cable in, my Win 10 computer beeps twice and switches to file manager. It shows the iPhone as a device and shows the Internal Storage folder. I double click on that folder and the DCIM folder appears, double click on that and 100Apple appears, double click on that and I see the actual pictures. Since these are individual files I can copy or delete them as I wish. Once they are on another device I can rename them as desired.
The phone would need to be powered up but it doesn't matter what screen I'm on. The phone may go to sleep on its own during the copy process. This process is identical with my iPad. It was very similar with my standalone digital camera and Android phone. The pictures have always been in the DCIM folder and possibly subfolders below it.
