Subject: Extender vs Mesh routers

Router extenders are the cheaper way to answer your problem. Financially. It will cost your wifi in terms of speed. Users who are relying on the extender will see their network speeds cut in half, approximately. The extender needs to talk to both the user's device and the base router. To do that, they use the exact same network frequencies, so half the extender's time is being that middle-man translating all the traffic it needs. Think of a range extender as a two-way radio communications between two folks. They are too far away and can't or may just barely be able to talk. A third person with the same radio can help the two talk - but that 3rd person listens, then has to repeat what they heard to the other person.

Mesh systems are similar without the operational costs of speed. Mesh networks use a totally separate channel for the inter-device communications. Much like a repeater in a two-way radio system - instantaneous communications.

Makers of mesh systems include Netgear Orbi 3 device system - $475; Google 3 devices $259; Ubiquiti 5 device system $600.

Reviewers find the Google system to be finiky.

Orbi is the speed demon of the systems.

Eero has a $100 feature called Eero Plus. This offers content filtering to keep those naughty, naughty sites off your network, and filters out malware. Eero plus will also automagically keep your Eeros updated. The Eero plus will also block ad pop-ups.

I have no experience with Ubiquiti, but other NAT forum contributors swear by their system for farms and ranches.

This short video from Leo LaPorte, "The Tech Guy" explains it well.
