If you run Ubuntu from a flash drive or from a DVD will that stop you from getting any permanent virus's on your computer?

To access any of the drives in the computer when running a live version of Ubuntu or Puppy Linux you have to mount them.  When you shut down Ubuntu it's gone along with any virus that was put on the browser.  When running from a DVD or CD you can't write to them either.

Any thoughts?
