Subject: DD-WRT router configured in Client mode? How to re-configure?

I am using two old Linksys WRT54GL routers to do some stuff that I don't think is extremely common.

1. I take the first router and set it up in "Client" mode. I connect that router to the wireless hotspot on my iPhone or iPad

2. From the LAN 1 port of that router I go to the WAN port of the second WRT54GL

3. Any device that needs internet in the house gets it from the second WRT54GL either via wireless or wired connections.

My problem is that if I want to switch from using my iPhone as the hotspot to using some other device as the hotspot, I can never get back into the first router to re-configure the connection information and allow it to connect to the new hotspot. It seems like once I get it set up and then unhook from it, the only way I can change any configuration is to hold the reset button on the router.

Is that the way it is always going to be in "Client" mode or am I just doing something wrong?

Thanks.
