What is file size?
Open file with notepad and look at it. It probably is garbled, but nothing is usually nothing.
XLS is old Excel format. Any newer version should open with out issues. Now after changing anything and going to save, may cause problems because xlsx is the newer format and older Excel versions can't open.
You can also use import under data tab, it may allow the data to come in. There are several different options.
