If you are interested, you might want to Google "Innas Chiron" and look at their free piston engine-pump combination. No crank, no cam, no flywheel. Energy is stored in accumulators, and the engine is free to stroke only when needed. They claim piston speed can also be varied during the stroke to manage emissions. Probably a little further out than the Navistar-Eaton concept, but interesting, nonetheless.
