Macon, IL | Putting new bars on 7700 combine, even though I had no problems I though while I had the feedhouse off I thought I may as well just be safe and put new bearings in the upper feederhouse shaft-$26 for the set-no problem.
Once I got the bearings off I notice the right housing was a little "wallowed" out-but didn't think much about it. Put the new bearings in yesterday I figured out why housing was rounded-even though the bearing was good the shaft has worn so much inside the bearing it was flopping around inside the bearing big time.
Long story short-new housing-$160, new upper feederhouse shaft $360. Any before anyone asked as long as I had it apart I am putting new gears on feederhouse drive chain-old ones had some life left but had been turned. So my little $26 repair turned into $600+.
I guess I shouldn't be complaining as it is better to find it now than in the field but still feels like a surprise kick in the pants.
