Don't worry about the drool from the air box drains, That's just the old top dog marking it's territory. I still run an old 70's IH cab over with a 430 hp 8 V 92 TI. Setting the racks on those old Detroit's was a chore with the two screw rack levers. Your reward for taking the time to do it right was an engine that was electric motor smooth at idle, the late single screw rack levers made that chore much easier. Tough old engines that were almost impossible to score if you put them to work before they were warmed up and probably the cheapest parts cost to overhaul of any diesel made. We used to rebuild those old 71's for $75 per hole, reman injectors were $18 I had them in farm tractors, pickups and big trucks.
The best sounding one in the area was a guy with a big truck mounted tub grinder, who had a 12 V 71 twin turbo with little stub pipes and a rain cap on each turbo. Down wind, you could hear it tearing apart wet bales from several miles away. those 24,000 exhaust pulses per minute made a lovely sound
