Subject: RE: Detriot 2 stroke

Shelby, MT
I ended up with a tandem with a detroit 6-71 last spring....I wanted the 600+ box instead of our 500 bushel boxs on our gas tandems(2388 2 dumps is more than 500 bushels)...I looked for a good cummins/cat etc but weren't any around that didn't cost an arm and a leg, and like you I was only going to haul the grain to the bins and maybe a few loads to town approx 15 miles...so 40k on a truck that I would put 500 miles a year didn't really make sense..we were leary of the noise and the age of the engine etc......that truck came up at an auction nearby in canada and went pretty cheap so we ended up with it....when harvest came we got it ready, changed oil etc which is a real pain in the arse on the 6-71....The 6-71 is the smallest of the truck sized...except the ones in the 1950's......so we know that it wasn't going to be a powerhouse...the torque rateing is not much more than my Powerstroke...not even close to the 1100-1500 ft/lbs of a cat/cummins.....in the field it is way better than the gas.....you will still drive it like a gas....mash the pettle to the floor and give it he11....on the road with 600+ it is not too impressive....5-10mph faster than a gas...and peddle to the metal...and smoke bellows out continuous..but I figured with the extra bushels and little extra power it was way better than a gas....especially if you have the 477 ford.....you are probably looking at 8v-92 and I would guess they are much better for power but not a cat/cummins......so I would say if you plan on this for field to bins and patient trips to town you will like the drive it hard and tough nature unlike the baby the cat/cummins cooldowns etc...if you plant to haul alot to town and will want a pup...get cat/cummins.....I don't plan on getting rid of my detroit....been fun and a lot more usable than the gas/500 bushel....but still plan on getting that cummins in the furture...and getting rid of anothe gas tandem...

oh and for engine durability....they are roughneck proof..on every service rig and lots of drilling rigs all over the world....that says alot
