Subject: RE: Detriot 2 stroke

Shaftsbury, Vermont (SW VT)
A couple years ago (OK '69 thru '75), i worked a second job through the winter hauling fuel out of the Port of Albany, NY for Merrill Transport. They still had a few R200 single axles, with RD450 engines and 5x4 trannys, but most of the trucks were FleetStar 2000's, tandems, with 6-71's and 4x4 Spicers. Back when max. gvw was 72,380 or some such number; company speed limit of 50 on two lane roads, 55 on divided roads. The Jimmys were geared so that 4-3 would just run 50 wide open, and with the tachographs in the trucks, that's where we ran them. They took it, and we made money with them; seldom broke down. The old two stick ones (later ones had air shift aux.), sometimes got hung up between gears. Kindamakeyabitchy when it happened on Hoosick Street hill coming up outa Troy!
Still remember lying in bed on a cold winter night listening to some poor sumbitch rowing one of them over the hill by the house, and for seems like forever beyond; up a gear and down two!
