I'm only on year 2 with my setup, but it works great. RPS400 feeding a large tank. No batteries, no pressure tank, when the water level falls below the sensor, the pump kicks on and it runs (as the sun allows) until the tank is full again. Extra water holding capacity to make it through overcast days (and the pump does still run on those days, just not as much). I think the RPS stuff was around $2k for the panels, brackets, pump, controller, & sensors.

The only downside to doing it this way is that it's not really set up for freezing weather. Which doesn't bother me because mine is in a pasture that I only stock during the growing season anyway. I suppose maybe you could cut a small hole in the standpipe so it was always draining a little out of the tank and it would move enough water to keep things thawed - maybe.
