From his side i understand why he would want to keep those trees as a “fence”.
If you can work civilly with him what if he pays a one time rent for the half acre and you don’t cut those trees as just a handshake agreement. Might go a long ways to future issues with that guy.
There are some people that you just cant deal with and this guy may be one of them.
