As someone who's put up a lot of hay over the years I appreciate and agree with most everything you posted. I'm not that familiar with Michigan weather but I suspect it's more favorable for hay curing than here in "the armpit of the midwest". You have to know what to do and when to do it and take advantage of weather opportunities. You mentioned you had 27% humidity. Around here 40% is considered a no humidity day.
Making hay is 60% skill and understanding of the science and 40% luck.
