Did everyone have a Rube Goldberg machine in the 80's or was that just in the movies?

I don’t know if they still do or not but Mankato State University (Minnesota) used to have a Rube Goldberg contest every year for high school students.

My school always sent a team or 2 of seniors from the Physics class.   Was a fun time ~25 years ago.

There was always an assigned task to try to accomplish while making it as needlessly complex as possible.  You got points for accomplishing the task and creativity/complexity.   The task the year I was there was to peel a banana.

It was a Science Olympiad event when I was in Jr High. We were one bent wire away from being national champions.
