Did everyone have a Rube Goldberg machine in the 80's or was that just in the movies?

Seems someone took an old military front axle off an old truck, rigged it up to the front end of an old H, rigged up an apparatus to drive it off the belt pully through a couple chain driven jackshafts. The article even listed the costs of some of the things he bought. We would joke that with only two months of his spare time, he added front end assist to a 30 HP tractor that only worked going forward, and only in one gear, with exposed chains and shafts and no safety shields anywhere, at a savings of at least $100 over buying a 30 HP utility tractor that had MFD from the factory.
Our other side joke was that someone like that had a wife that nagged a lot, and projects like that kept him out of the house, and her out of his shop.

This perfectly sums up what I was trying to say with the farm show reference.

The machines that end up being marginally functional, with a degree of safety not accepted in most 3rd world countries, and are built and run by guys that have already lost fingers, or parts of limbs to corn pickers, etc.

All of this talk is going to force me to re-subscribe to farm-show now :^)
