Subject: Sprayer pump trouble

Milford, IL
Sprayer pump quit yesterday, no pressure and no flow. I pulled the pump apart to inspect and the 3/8" fine thread castillated nut had walked off the shaft and allowed the key to slip out of the keyway, I suspect the hydraulic motor was rotating as planned but not engaging the impeller. Bearing feels okay. I gave two of the six nubbins on the castle nut a light squeeze with some vice grips (as a means to ensure it 'locks') and reassembled hoping for the best.

It occured to me later to dig through my oddball fastener stash (thanks grandpa) and I located a new copy of the 3/8" fine thread castle nut and another more traditional 3/8" fine thread locknut. I think the locknut would be better than the castle nut as there is no possible way to insert a keeper or safety wire with this pump/impeller design. Would there be any harm in using a regular lock nut?
