Subject: a GPS RTK engineer for precision farming & drones

Switzerland

Hi there, I am new here. Just a little bit introduction of myself. I am a GPS RTK engineer who is passionate for precision farming & drones. If you have any questions regarding this subject, we can discuss together.

You should post this in the precision farming and drone forums! I have a question, is it possible to add gps coordinates to a image taken with a drone other than google earth? I just bought a phantom 4 for agriculture use and I'm exploring different things to do with it! So far it's more less a toy:-)

Shouldn't need to add anything. Right click on the photo and go down to properties, click details tab. Scroll down to GPS section. Lat/Long are right there. Only the case for photos though, not video. This is from a Phantom 3 Preofessional but I'm certain P4 is the same.

I have a question. How do you see RTK being cost effective for drones?

Over the long run I envision a fleet of drones spraying your field while someone sits at the tender trailer reloading drones with say fungicide and fuel. Something like DroneDeploy would keep the drones coordinated, spraying the parts of the field that they need to spray. Maybe they would be 40 HP with a 10' boom?

The biggest hitch to this plan in my opinion is you would need RTK to make this work and the unlocks for a bunch of drones would be cost prohibitive. Instead of spending big bucks for an RTK unlocked antenna and perhaps a cellular modem for one large piece, you would be 10 of those unlocked antennas and 10 cellular modems.

How do we get around this cost prohibitive issue?

Hi Hillbily Techie, thanks for the tips. The GNSS receiver needs to response to the external pulse and record the shooting time. However, our current products don't support this feature yet. It will be considered for the next versions. Stay tuned. Hopefully, our technical user guides will be helpful if you need extra information.

Simple. There is no such thing as an RTK unlocked antenna. RTK uses a regular GPS antenna. The cost isn't in the hardware or software, the cost is there because people will pay it.

You could do a single cell modem setup like a router, the drones connect like wifi while in the same field as the router.

The price will be set at what people are willing to pay.

RTK isn't complicated. The base station thinks "I'm programmed to know I'm actually at this location, but the GPS antenna says I'm actually at this location. Therefore the GPS antenna is out by 3' North." The base station then broadcasts "hey rover, the GPS antenna is out by 3' North." The rover then makes that correction. You can broadcast using whatever media you want. No parts of that are very difficult to implement or program. We pay $10k in unlocks because that's what we're willing to pay for it.

You can do open source RTK for $500 plus GPS antenna.
