Looking for options on a good summer annual forage I can no-till drill behind wheat that would be good for feeding beef cows. I would prefer to Round Bale dry . Any other thoughts or opinions are appreciated. TIA

Ohio state has a good deal of research on oats grown after wheat. Sorghum is what has been recommended to us before. I would recommend planning on baleage or haylage since fall weather isn't usually conducive to drying hay.

Teff would be another good option.

Can you graze them?

Edit - to change order of pictures and insert labels

First 1 pix is 15 way mix after wheat planter early July taken September 23rd
Second pix is same mix yesterday
3rd pix is 18 way mix at JA Scott Farm fall field day in September. I believe this was a 200+ acre field and has 12 -500 by 40 ft strip trials in it as well.
4th pix is a planting date comparison at JA Scott Farm field day in September
5th and 6th pix are the JA Scott Farm field and strip trial plot we sampled in November
7th is one cut forage sorghum after barley planted late July at the end of August. My brother is 6-2.
8th and 9th are mid to late September same field after barley

If you would let the cattle graze i would prefer a mix of radishes, turnips, sorghum sudan, cowpeas, and millet. I'd give welters a call since i see you are close to their area

Dry is going to be a trick, oats work well but don't wait too long. Hard to get anything dry is what we have found, did; oats, annual rye, radish (turnips/brasica would have been better). Planted after wheat, waited till mid nov. to mow and couldn't get it dry enough to bale even for baleage. Hope to get a cut in the spring.

IDK, not a cow on either one of those messes. Herefords were brought in for a conversation piece at the SWCD field day, but no electric for fencer on first set of pix nor fence or water on either place. Renter on first one wanted me to bring in cows to clean that up and add manure, but very little fence in that part of the county anymore so I figured the deer would have it drug 2 counties over and I'd be chasing cows all over the county, plus along a country road with no one near by to watch over them. Ours went into a bag we started feeding right after Christmas.
