north central Iowa, Hampton | I liked the museum at Whitefish point also--it was a 3-4 hour visit. It's an old lifesaving / lighthouse station and the buildings are well preserved. They have the Edmund Fitzgerald's bell. After the wreck was found, a replacement bell was cast as a memorial and swapped out using some sort of submersible. The original bell is now at Whitefish point.
We rode a tour boat around Sault St. Marie, through the locks etc. I liked that. Also found a restaurant right across from the lock visitor center with a neat vibe--I think it was something like the Lockview..... yeah, creative!
We did a boat tour of the "Painted Rocks" area shoreline. That was neat, but it did tie up several hours.
Lots of hiking opportunities in State Parks (way more waterfalls than I expected) , but that may be more time than you want to spend.
