Subject: The cost of shipping grain

Clarke Co, Iowa
By truck 30-50 cents per bushel for 100 miles. 10 cents for under 10 miles.
By unit train (100 plus cars) 65 cents per bushel mid-west to ports or end users. Handling on both ends of unit trains 20+ cents per bushel.
By barge about the same as rail and the same handling charges on both ends.
By sea $60 a metric ton 2200LB or 39.29 bushel or $1.53 per bushel. Plus, handling on both ends.

So, total transportation and handling for grain from a port in Brazil to the Midwest around $3.00 per bushel. Add that to the fact that Brazil does not have any cheap way to get grain from the production areas to the ports.
