Subject: RE: quail and crops

West Texas
About those predators... due to the improved habitat, quail are not the only animals to flourish. There are rodents aplenty of all kinds, from prairie dogs and cotton rats all the way down to kangaroo rats and deer mice. I leave the predators undisturbed for that very reason. The predators regulate their own populations in their own unique ways, and rarely do I catch them attempting to cash in on a tasty goat kid.

In spite of the pressure from predators, the coveys remain relatively undiminished in size until greenup when they split up. There's lots of cover, after all, not to mention all the alternative meal plans available to the hungry Wile E. Coyote.
