West Texas | Has anyone noticed a link between quail populations and the presence of or lack of certain plants?
I've been assured by my agronomist that pigweed is essential to healthy quail populations, and from my own observations it would appear that he is correct.
I consistently see the largest coveys near patches of pigweed.
I can't tell what the link is, whether there is some essential insect for the young to feed on, or if the seed or some other part of the plant is involved. The coveys continue to thrive after I've plowed under or otherwise killed the pigweed, so I kinda doubt the seed is all that essential.
The Bobwhite and Scaled quail populations have really exploded since I began growing grasses and relaxed my stance against weeds of any kind. We've probably re-populated the county from our farm. lol I don't hunt, but I get a real kick out of seeing large coveys explode in front of me while I'm working. Hey a guys gotta get his entertainment somewhere. lol
