I just loaded my 2019 QB on another computer.  It went out and got all the upgrades that were available for that version - just not payroll updates due to age and no current payment for that service set up.  I don't have a paid payroll program for Quickbooks - it just gives me a warning each time i use it but I do my own math and has worked for years.  I use Adams tax for helper for my W-2 and 1099's.
I have not used that QB program on that laptop yet but I do not see why it will not work like i have on my desktop.  The desktop has an i3 processor and is getting slow.  I put QB on a newer and faster laptop to probably use in future.  
I do not plan on stopping using my 2019 version as I am now.  Not a fan of monthly cost to use QB online.  I bought my 2019 version for $79 in March of 2019.
