I doubt 8gb ram is a limiting factor. External drives ssd or otherwise are slow.
Is your current hard drive an ssd? If not that may be you speed bottleneck.
Before spending anything check you startup apps. Good change you have a bunch of stuff loading in the background you don’t really need.
